The RITUAL of SMUDGING
Smudging is a ceremonial cleansing used in many religious and spiritual practices. Buddhist temples use incense sticks. Catholic churches use Frankincense. But, Native American ritual is most commonly brought to mind.
Native American ceremonies are entered with an open heart, so one may be guided by the spirits to enter the sacred realm of knowledge. Native American Elders teach that in the healing process, the cleansing of participants and the environment of destructive spirits is essential. Many Elders believe that before one can be healed physically, emotionally, or spiritually, they must first be cleansed of any negative energy.
Certain herbs, commonly sage, sweetgrass, and /or cedar are burned in a smudging ceremony. Other combinations of herbs available on a regional basis are also used. Dried Lavender is one popular example. The herbs are dried and burned in a shallow pottery bowl or shell. Or they may be tied in a bundle forming a stick or wand. Often a feather fan is used to direct the smoke over and around the participant. You can smudge a physical body or a space such as a home, sacred place or office.
